War

War. The world has seen plenty of it but then again, so did I. My earliest memory of war was when I was a child. I can still vividly remember the tray, spoons and cups shaking as the the American tanks patrolled our neighbourhood in 2003. The knocking on doors by foreign troops. The unpredictable sound of guns and the terror it brought to our households. I was 5 years old back then.

Whether you're watching a movie, walking in the road or talking to that chatty cousin, there's always a guy saying "THE END IS NIGH" just like Alan Moore's Watchmen. The thing is, we never thought of why is that happening. Emile Dorkheim, the famed French sociologist attributed crime to uneducation and poor financial background. So when a country is invaded, robbed of its fathers, sons, mothers and other valuable resources, it's only natural that poverty and chaos ensue.

I remember how, overnight, $50 became a fortune enough to feed a family for a month. I remember how my mon struggled, how she had to stand last in line to ask the grocery vendor to wait for payment, how some of the people I knew ate grilled tomatoes and how some ate once a day. I remember hanging out with my nephew and eating falafel in his neighborhood, only to see his friend dragged away but the restaurant owner. He's an orphan and he works there to support his mother and sister. I remember going to pickup my sister from her middle school and finding many police gathered at the door trying to defuse a bomb which can kill my sister whose on the other end. I remember the many gun shots and explosions near my school and how I cried under the stairs. We can never forget war but war can always forget about us and move into its next victim. War never changes it's devouring cycle but it only repeats itself. It has generated countless of bodies. Hundreds of orphans and most importantly in this world, it has generated trillions of profit.

I wake up everyday, only to remember everything but as the late David Bowie once said “ planet earth is Blue but there’s nothing I can do.”
